After spending most of the first half on the sideline battling an injury, it took Ryan Behmer all of 22 seconds to show what kind of a difference it makes when he is in the Adams Central backfield.
Behmer rumbled 35 yards for a touchdown on Adams Central’s first play of the second half as the Patriots broke open a close game with two touchdowns in the opening five minutes of the second half on their way to a 33-0 victory over Hastings High in front of a standing room only crowd at Lloyd Wilson Field.
The win was the third straight for Adams Central and improved the Patriots to 5-2 on the season and 1-0 in district play. Hastings High dropped to 1-5, 0-1 in district play with the loss.
“This is a good win. They are a tough team,” Behmer said. “They didn’t give anything to us. We had to earn it all.”
After being limited to 5 yards on five carries in the first half while dealing with a shoulder injury, Behmer ran wild after halftime — racking up 152 yards and three touchdowns on just 11 carries in the second half.
The 185-pound junior tailback scored on runs of 35, 67 and 8 yards as Adams Central finished with 198 yards rushing.
“Ryan makes a difference when he is back there,” Adams Central coach Bill Carlin said. “We kind of schemed him a little different after halftime and it worked real well for us.”
